I like to run trails and I do it year ’round.  Granted, the snow limits where I can go but there are a few trails where the snow is compacted enough to run or hike on even in the dead of winter.  Three to consider: 1) FIBERBOARD ACCESS ROAD…located at the top of highway 267 (aka Brockway Summit), the trail is groomed for snowmobiles and goes for miles.  Took Otis (my dog companion) on a 10 miler yesterday and it really was a blast.  NOTE:  IF YOU HIT THIS TRAIL, IT’S BEST TO DO IT EITHER EARLY IN THE MORNING OR EARLY EVENING TO AVOID SNOWMOBILE TRAFFIC; 2) MARTIS DAM RD…located east side of  highway 267 in the Martis Valley just north of the airport.  It’s about 2.5 miles from the parking area to the dam so, round trip, figure about 5 miles and there’s no traffic. Beautiful views of the valley and surrounding mountains; and 3) TUNNEL CREEK ACCESS…located on the eastern outskirts of Incline Village (by the old Ponderosa Ranch of “Bonanza” fame).  This may be my winter favorite winter trail since it has stunning views of Tahoe. It’s a long/consistent “grind” (estimate about 1,200′ vertical).  Like the Martis Dam Rd., there’s no traffic.  You actually end up at the world famous Flume Trail. Out-and-back it’s probably 6-7 miles.  DOGS ARE WELCOME ON ALL THESE TRAILS so bring your buddy and go!
